Coutu is the US subsidiary of Warwick, Rhode Island, Jean Coutu based Group (PJC) USA Inc., operated primarily along the east coast, under the banner of Brooks Eckerd Pharmacy in New England and upstate New Pharmacy York and Pennsylvania South Georgia. US operations were sold in agreement with Rite Aid. Brooks Coutu bought in 1994 from the now defunct chain Revco drug. (Revco acquired Brooks few months as part of its acquisition of Hook's-SupeRx, Inc., as an operator of several large pharmacy chains.)

In mid-2004, Jean Coutu Flyer Laval bought more than half of Eckerd network of stores (in particular units along the east coast) of retail department J.C. Penney. It continued to operate these stores under the Eckerd name. (The remaining Eckerd stores were sold at CVS / pharmacy). From 1999 to 2004, the chain was the second fastest growing retailer in the world. On 24 August 2006, Rite Aid announced it will acquire the operations in 1858, Jean Coutu Brooks and Eckerd US $ 1.45bn in cash and the issuance of shares, giving Jean Coutu's stake in Rite Aid 32%. [4] Rite Aid announced the acquisition completed on 4 June, 2007.
